Not only were 1.7m EU citizens denied their vote in the 2019 EU elections - hundreds of thousands of Britons abroad also lost out.

This was due to the late arrival of postal ballot papers and the operation of the 15 year rule.

The 15 year rule is the law which bans Britons abroad from voting in the UK if they have been overseas for more than 15 years.

It is vital that all parties are called on to include a promise that they will legislate to overturn the 15 year rule if returned to office.

In 2015, following a campaign by New Europeans and others, the Conservative party included such a pledge in their manifesto.

But David Cameron failed to implement the promise and so over one million Britons abroad were denied the vote in the referendum.

Britons abroad for longer than 15 years denied vote in General Election

In 2017, we insisted the Conservatives include the pledge in their manifesto which they did.

Despite this, the 15 year rule has still not been over-turned and so most Britons abroad will miss out again.

We urgently need your backing as we call on all political parties to pledge to end the 15 year rule in their election manifestos.

We will ask MPs to raise this issue in parliament before it is dissolved.

And we ask you to write to your MP to demand that they ask their party to promise to end this long-standing democratic injustice.

If Britons abroad had  been allowed to vote in the 2016 referendum, the the UK would have voted to remain in the European Union.

The failure to abolish the 15 year rule, despite the promise to do so, is one more sign of the contempt with which this government holds our democratic rights.

Just as in the case of #DeniedMyVote at the European elections, with the 15 year rule we are witnessing a deliberate and systematic failure by the Government to make sure that all who should be able to vote are in fact able to do so.

It is unacceptable that citizens' rights should be cancelled out for reasons of political expediency. We are doing everything we can to stop this.

In a few days time the parties will publish their manifestos.

Lets make sure they include a pledge to hold a public inquiry into #DeniedMyVote and to end the 15 year rule which prevents Britons abroad from voting.
