The Issue

Dear Prime Minister Rishi Sunak,

I urge you to end the UK’s support for disproportionate and one-sided United Nations resolutions that single out Israel for differential and discriminatory treatment.

Every year, the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, the Commission on the Status of Women, the World Health Organization and UNESCO single out Israel through disproportionate and one-sided resolutions, while neglecting the plight of millions of human rights victims worldwide.

At the General Assembly in 2018, for example, Israel was targeted by 21 one-sided resolutions, with only one each on Iran, Syria, North Korea, Crimea, Myanmar, and the United States.

Meanwhile, there were zero resolutions adopted or introduced on the human rights situations in China, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Belarus, Cuba, Turkey, Pakistan, Vietnam, Algeria, or on 175 other countries.

Likewise, since its founding in 2006, the UN Human Rights Council has adopted more resolutions against Israel than on Iran, Syria and North Korea combined; convened more urgent sessions and inquiries on Israel than on any other country; and continues to single out Israel alone under a permanent agenda item at every session.

As shown by the UN Watch database, the UK annually votes for more than 70% of the anti-Israel resolutions adopted by the General Assembly.

All governments must be held accountable for their human rights record. Yet the practice of focusing the UN human rights agenda disproportionately on Israel, while ignoring gross and systematic violations in the rest of the world, constitutes politicized, selective, partial, and subjective behavior.

By allocating scarce UN resources to the production of one-sided and politicized reports targeting Israel, victims in places like China, Pakistan and Zimbabwe are ignored.

By voting for many of these anti-Israeli resolutions, the UK goes against the equality principle enshrined in the UN Charter and the values of universality, impartiality, objectivity, and non-selectivity set forth in the Human Rights Council’s founding document, UNGA Resolution 60/251.

I urge the UK to uphold the UN’s founding principles by ending any and all support for the UN’s obsessive scapegoating of Israel, the world’s only Jewish state. It is time for the UN to put an end to bigotry and prejudice, and to promote the human rights of all.
