We are A Helping Horn, a youth organization formed in January 2023. Our team of high-school mentors and directors have been deeply involved in instrumental music for the past 5-8 years. We've experienced firsthand the struggles faced by our schools to provide access to quality arts education in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).

Music education is not just an extracurricular activity; it's a vital part of our educational system that fosters creativity, improves academic performance, and promotes teamwork among students. However, MCPS is facing serious challenges when it comes to maintaining this important program due to lack of funding.

We need increased funding for music education as well as instrument repair & maintenance. Without adequate resources, we risk losing this valuable aspect of our children's education.

According to the National Association for Music Education, schools with music programs have significantly higher graduation rates than those without (90.2% compared to 72.9%). Moreover, students who participate in music are more likely than their peers not involved in arts education programs to attend college (source: National Endowment for the Arts).

This petition calls on local schools and MCPS Board of Education members in Montgomery County to increase funding and raise awareness about the importance of music education within our public schools.
