In this state we love so much, New York, countless individuals are struggling to make ends meet. Despite standing at the center of the world's wealth and prosperity, a significant portion of New Yorkers are living off very limited cash assistance. This issue hits me personally, as it directly impacts members of my close community, friends, neighbors and families, trying to survive amidst towering costs of living.

According to the Community Service Society, an alarming one in four New Yorkers live in poverty (Community Service Society, 2019). Efforts to lift our neighbors out of this dire situation seem to be falling on barren ground, as the existing cash assistance programs barely cover the basic necessities. Food, shelter, clothing and healthcare remain a daily battle for thousands of New Yorkers.

Through this petition, we are calling on the New York State government to take urgent, substantial action. We need accessible, sufficient, and sustainable cash assistance to secure the welfare of all New Yorkers and to ensure our beloved city remains one that cherishes and upholds the dignity of all its residents.
