Dear Supporter,

As we reported last month, Costco stated in a recent animal welfare policy update that it will be working with suppliers to reduce confinement time.

Our goal is to see Costco transition to a 100% crate free system, but this is a noteworthy sign of progress.  Using improved technology, more principled producers are now reducing confinement time to less than nine days for the mother pig’s entire pregnancy cycle.

Again, while our goal is to get rid of gestation crates altogether, it’s good to see Costco taking steps to expand on its animal welfare commitments. Now we need to make sure Costco sticks to its word!

How can you help?

Sample script: Costco’s recent animal welfare policy stated that it is taking steps to reduce confinement time for mother pigs stuck in gestation crates.  While it is disappointing that Costco is still allowing its suppliers to use gestation crates at all, I am glad to see this effort from Costco. How and when can we expect Costco to update us on progress?

Thanks for your continued support!
