Have you seen the news about Wall Street billionaire Carl Icahn taking on McDonald's and Kroger about their failed pig welfare policies?  

Considering Costco's failure to live up to its own policy to eliminate  gestation crates, can Costco be the next target?

Here's what you need to know:

• Ten years ago, Costco publicly told its suppliers to phase out gestation crates by 2022.
• Now, Costco's is saying on its website that it's acceptable for suppliers to use gestation crates during "certain times" − a dubious way of wording a routine practice that Costco suppliers have always used to confine mother pigs in tiny cages for the early stages of their pregnancies. This amounts to about three months of extreme confinement every year. 
• Costco is also saying in its "official" Gestation Crate Policy that pregnant pigs should “have adequate room to turn around”. This statement is in direct conflict with Costco's online animal welfare policy since pregnant pigs confined in gestation crates – which Costco admits to still allowing – cannot turn around in their tiny cages.

10 years ago Costco told its pork suppliers to eliminate gestation crates by 2022. Now, Costco says it is just REDUCING the time pigs are locked in tight cages ... not eliminating.  Confining an animal in a cage so small it cannot turn around for any amount of time is never acceptable. Your pig policy is disappointing and confusing. Please live up to your original promise to eliminate gestation crates. I know you can do better.
