Dear Supporter,
Another year is coming to an end, and there is still no word from Costco on whether it will require its major suppliers to eliminate gestation crates -- not just reduce the their use.
Here's the problem: Costco says its goal for 2022 is for "100% of the pork sold in our fresh departments ... be from open pen gestation housing" rather than crates. But dig a little deeper and you'll learn that its major suppliers will still be using gestation crates for the first third (that's 6 weeks!) of the mother pig's pregnancy cycle.
Bottom line: Costco isn't really eliminating gestation crates, just reducing their use.
Please tell Costco to walk the talk, and require its suppliers to eliminate gestation crates for 100% of the time.
Costco Members: Here's how how you can help:
- Call customer service: 1-800-774-2678 - Option #1. Have your membership number handy.
- Chat online. Lower left hand side of page select: Contact Us/Chat Us. Category: Warehouse/Membership. Subject: Product Information.
- Message suggestion: I'm disappointed to learn that even though you promise 100% crate free pork by 2022, your biggest supplier still uses crates for the first part of a pig's pregnancy. When will Costco finally require its suppliers to be 100% crate free?
Non-Costco members: Provide feed at the Costo.com website. Just click the small vertical blue “Feedback” tab on the right side of the screen. Select "website/product availability".
Thank you for speaking out. Let's make 2022 the year Costco finally commits to a pork supply chain that is truly 100% crate free.
