Friends, At the last meeting of the C.H.E. Cafe Collective, there was discussion about actions people could take BEFORE the March 14 deadline to 'self-evict' ourselves from the Cafe space -- actions to try to get the UCSD administration to NOT go ahead with the ultimatum and the threat to post the 5-day notice to vacate. There was no consensus that we could pull together a credibly big enough protest action. There was no other plan agreed on for pre-March 14 action. If we had more time for a much longer meeting, we might have reached agreement on something. So, it is up to individuals and small groups (or big groups if anybody can make it happen) to try to talk directly to Vice Chancellor Juan Gonzalez and to Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. The more people who do it the more chance we have that they will back off. This is not about "negotiations". It is about making demands to PUBLIC OFFICIALS at a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY, as citizens, as students, alumni, faculty, as campus staff, et cetera. Demands that the administration NOT evict a student coop, that they restore the lease, restore necessary building maintenance funding, and bargain in good faith for a new lease for all the coops, for the new lease period that starts when the current one ends in 2016. We know they will still lie and say there is a "safety" issue, even though we have proved the building complies with the Fire Code safety regulations and even though the building has never been "red tagged" by any authorized official to designate it as unsafe or uninhabitable. We know they will still say there is a "lack of student support" and point to the student board (UCAB) vote to not fund maintenance costs this year, when we know they lied about and astronimically inflated the amount of money the board was told it would cost and when we know 22 percent of the students on UCSD's own survey said they thought the CHE Cafe was a funding priority. There are about 30,000 students at UCSD. We don't need to engage them in their psycho-pathic narratives. We do need to make life hell for them for the next few days (and perhaps beyond.) The contact information for the Chancellor and the VC are at their website at http://chancellor.ucsd.edu/cabinet I think phone calls, phone zaps, emails and in-person walk-in visits are all needed. Fill up their voicemail and keep calling after it is full! Et cetera! Please pass this around if you agree. And, here is the C.H.E. Cafe Collective's latest press release about the Eviction Crisis: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 10, 2015 MEDIA ADVISORY from C.H.E. Café Collective La Jolla — Following the recent release of resolutions with proposals by UCSD's two student governments, the Associated Students (AS) and the Graduate Students Association (GSA), the C.H.E Café Collective has been contacted by the University administration. The administration has asked that the C.H.E Café Collective voluntarily vacate the building by March 14, 2015. Vice Chancellor Gonzalez has stated that failure to comply with this notice will result in the 5-day notice posting of the court ordered eviction. That court order is on appeal and the decision of the appellate court is pending. The letter from the Vice Chancellor is online at http://newindicator.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Gonzalez-to-CHE-March-3-2015.pdf Authors of the AS and GSA resolutions have stated in writing that the administration's interpretation of the resolutions is contrary to the intent of both student government councils. No changing of the locks or eviction of the collective was intended by the student body representatives. Don Johnson, the chair of the GSA committee which wrote the GSA resolution, has stated he personally is attempting to get the administration to honor the intent of the resolutions and cease the eviction threat. Prior to receiving the notice from Vice Chancellor Gonzalez, the collective released a statement in response to the AS and GSA proposals. That statement is posted on the C.H.E Blog at http://thechecafe.blogspot.com/2015/02/che-cafe-response-to-asgsa-decisions.html At this time we want to reiterate: The C.H.E. Cafe Collective disagrees with any solution that includes the Collective leaving the C.H.E. Cafe Building, other than necessary periods during construction work. To leave the building would be tantamount to forfeiting the property. The UC San Diego administration has a history of refusing to allow organizations, such as the Craft Center, to re-claim buildings after they have left. We also feel the reasoning behind the request to leave the building is problematic. There is not a need to vacate. No safety issues with the building have been properly demonstrated, and student support of the C.H.E. Cafe Collective is strong, and continues to grow with each meeting and event that is being held at the C.H.E. Cafe building. The C.H.E. Collective will continue to work with all concerned parties especially the AS and the GSA to stop the eviction of the C.H.E. Meanwhile, following a new January 2015 report issued by the UCSD Facilities, Design and Construction Department which recommended razing the C.H.E Cafe building to the ground, the C.H.E. Cafe Support Network (CCSN) has donated funds to cover the expenses of nominating the Cafe for historic site designation. The C.H.E. Cafe Collective has endorsed the project. An historic site preservation expert has been retained to work on the nomination documents. Both the UCSD Associated Students Council and the UCSD Graduate Students Council have adopted resolutions which call upon the UCSD administration to provide costs estimates for historic landmark preservation. The collective is willing and has always been willing to cease business at the Cafe during actual construction work on any agreed upon repairs. We are making a new counter-offer to the UCSD administration which again makes this clear. We only ask in return that the administration provide basic guarantees of the security of our interest in the property and of our ability to conduct business in a specified alternative location on campus during periods of actual construction work at the C.H.E Cafe building. An acceptable alternative location must have both a kitchen and space for concerts and events. We ask that a new lease be signed, at least short term (while the lease negotiations proceed for all 4 student coops, whose 10 year lease expires in 2016). We ask that the lease specify relevant legal statutory or regulatory code provisions which require any repair work to the building. We ask that the lease contain a provision which guarantees that the administration will not interfere with the collective's ability to raise the funds to pay ourselves for any legally required repairs.
