The Bluffton Village Council gave one man, Dick Boehr, free reign to turn Shannon Cemetery (final resting place of Bluffton's founding fathers, revolutionary war vets and civil war vets) into a park. Mr. Boehr has dug up all the headstones (standing and fallen) and proposes building a gazebo, side walk, garden, landscaping and a "display" out of the headstones on top of the 125 graves in this small pioneer cemetery. Mr. Boehr claims there are no remains left in the ground but has not done a GPR (ground penetrating radar) study to prove this. Yet he has spent thousands so far on the destruction and desecration of this cemetery. He also claimed in front of council and cemetery supporters that the headstones were wrapped and stored in a secure location. We found that, in fact, they are being stored out in the open with no secure gate or building. They are not wrapped and are stacked precariously on top of each other face side up exposed to the damaging elements. We have addressed council and there is talk of appointing a committee. Help us tell Bluffton Council to restore Shannon Cemetery, to put back the headstones, to do a GPR study, to mark the unknown graves, and accept the help of professionals and volunteers that care about these early people.
