Block Matthew Schumacher's commutation bid for justice
The Issue
My brother, Frank Lawrence Fazio, was brutally murdered by Matthew Schumacher in December of 1999. Frank was taken from us in the most heinous way possible, beaten with a bat and stabbed 20 times. Schumacher was 17 years and 8 months old, nearly an adult, when he committed this horrific act and was tried as an adult. His sentencing, life without the possibility of parole, reflected the magnitude of his crime. He caused irrevocable loss to our family and poses a danger to society.
Governor Tony Evers is considering granting a commutation for Schumacher, effectively allowing the possibility of parole and reduction of his current sentence. Frank wasn't granted a second chance at life, as Schumacher robbed him of that opportunity. Why should his murderer be given that privilege? Is this really the kind of message we want to send, that cold-blooded murderers can eventually walk free, while their victims remain silent forever?
Allowing a murderer like Schumacher to avoid his original sentence undermines the justice system and neglects the sanctity of life that the system vows to protect.
Governor Evers and the Commutation Advisory Board need to consider the pain and repercussions endured by victims' families and uphold the original sentence. Those repercussions created a domino effect as my mother and father never recovered from the trauma caused by my brother's murder and later died due to heartbreak. Schumacher took a life deliberately and with forethought; his actions should bear the weight of their consequences for the remainder of his natural life.
Please stand with our family as we continue to fight for justice for Frank. Help us ensure that this devastating loss is never forgotten. Sign this petition to ensure that Matthew Schumacher remains behind bars and serves the sentence imposed for taking Frank's life.
