One of Australia’s biggest coal power stations in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley is set to stay open for four more years amid fears of devastating electricity shortages, in an extraordinary U-turn for the state Labor government’s renewable energy-only blueprint.
A decision to keep coal in the power system for longer underscores Australia’s volatile transition from fossil fuels to green power, even as federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen insisted a move to double the amount of renewable energy by the end of the decade remained on track.

Note: Victorian Energy Minister, Lily D’Ambrosio has strongly denied that the Victorian Government has had talks with EnergyAustralia about keeping Yallourn open for four more years. But the record from the AEMO’s Data Dashboard tonight 20th March 2025 8.50pm AEDST. Showing Victoria electricity was generated by Brown coal 71%, gas 6% hydro 14%, solar 0%, wind 9%. Shows that if Yallourn was closed in 2028, Victoria would suffer severe electricity shortages and blackouts.
SO LET US KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND USE OUR PETITION TO STOP THE CLOSURE OF MORE AUSTRALIAN COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS, WHICH IS SO IMPORTANT.
This includes Eraring in now 2027, Yallourn NOW 2032), Bayswater in 2033, with Loyang A in 2045 and all other coal fired power stations.
And no consideration of them being closed be considered until assured supplies of base load electricity 24/7 is available from coal, gas or uranium powered generators. Even if this requires the coal fired generators be compulsory acquired by the relevant Government, in the National interest and to maintain the supply of base load electricity 24/7 that is essential to STOP the Grid from collapsing.

Example: Eastern States 20th March 2025 8.50pm AEDST. Batteries 0%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 50% Brown Coal 16%, Gas 12%, Hydro 14% Diesel 0% Solar 0%, Wind 8%. 8.50pm a time when Solar has entered a daily 16 hours (lack of fuel), zero production period. Unreliable wind is all over the place averaging only 8%, but ranging from only 6% in Qld, up to 23% in SA.
To underline the importance of our coal fired generators 07/03/25, 8.30 pm AEDST. In NSW coal is producing 78% Solar 0%, Wind 10%, Qld coal 74%, solar 0% wind 6% Vic Brown coal 71%, gas 6% hydro 14%, solar 0%, wind 9%. SA batteries 0%, gas 75%, solar 0%, wind 23% and Tas hydro 87%, wind 10%.
