Peter Dutton let the cat out of the bag, when he said (23/1/25). “In term of our target commitments, we have committed to net-zero by 2050. That is the commitment we have made and that is what we will honour.”
Before the press conference in the NSW target seat of Gilmore, Mr Dutton told 2GB radio the Paris agreement was important for Australia’s exporters.
“We are an export nation, so unlike the United States we are a small nation, we are a population of only 27 million people,” Mr Dutton said.
“We produce more than we can consume and farmers and manufacturers rely on markets in Asia, in Europe, in America, to export our products.
“And we have signed up to an international agreement which, I think, will have continuing relevance for countries in Europe.
“The future dynamic can change but we have to act in our country’s best interests and to have European countries, for example but not exclusively, apply tariffs to our exports would mean a loss of economic activity here, a loss of jobs.”
In the statement Dutton explains that Australia trying to achieve Net Zero by 2050, has nothing to do with stabilising the World’s temperature. It is because European Countries and the US (under Obama) who had signed up to the Paris Agreement ‘to reduce Carbon Dioxide (Co2) emissions by 2050, have ‘threatened’ the Australian Government, that if Australia didn’t sign up to Net Zero by 2050. Then those Countries would impose a Net Zero tariff on Australian, mining, agricultural and manufacturing exports.
I believe that Dutton, should call out this action for what it is, extortion of the worst kind. If the other Countries want to follow the Net Zero madness, that is for them to deal with the consequences, but they have no right to force it on Australia.
Dutton should follows Trump’s lead and withdraw from the Paris Agreement, tell the other to commit energy suicide if they want to but count Australia out. Then work out what is the best way forward in the interim and long term periods and come up with a plan to put that into action.
Overall, the most important point is that all plans must guarantee a constant supply of low cost, base load electricity, 24/7.
IN THE MEANTIME THE INTENTION TO CLOSE ALL AUSTRALIAN COAL FIRED POWER STATIONS MUST BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.
This includes Eraring in 2025, Yallourn in (2032 now 2028), Bayswater in 2033, with Loyang A in 2045 and all other coal fired power stations.
And no consideration of them being closed be considered until assured supplies of base load electricity 24/7 is available from coal, gas or uranium powered generators. Even if this requires the coal fired generators be compulsory acquired by the relevant Government, in the National interest and to maintain the supply of base load electricity 24/7 that is essential to STOP the Grid from collapsing.

Particularly at 7pm and 7am (Or a time that suits you?) watch (and record) the mix of coal, gas hydro, batteries, solar and wind generation and the prices per MWh for each State on the AEMO dashboard.
Example: Eastern States 11th January 2025 8.05Pm AEDST. Batteries 1%, Biomass 0%, Black Coal 45% Brown Coal 14%, Gas 8%, Hydro 11% Diesel 0% Solar 1%, Wind 19%. 8.05pm a time when Solar is just starting its 17 hour sleep, producing just 1%. Wind is all over the place averaging 27%, but ranging from only 7% in Qld, up to 94% in SA.
To underline the importance of our coal fired generators 11/01/25 8.05pm AEDST. Coal is producing in NSW 77% Wind 16%, Qld coal 74%, wind 6% Vic Brown coal 53%, wind 22%. SA gas 26%, Wind 69% and Tas 83% hydro, wind 15%.
