Hi Team Members. When you go into a Service Station, you can look at the price board and know the price per litre for the fuel, you will pay that day.
So you will be amazed to know, that in the case of electricity, that in order to set the price for electricity retailers to purchase, (just for thirty minutes) the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) uses this system.
The AEMO has electricity generators powered by Batteries, Biomass, Black Coal, Brown Coal, Gas, Hydro, Liquid Fuel, Solar and Wind. All submit the price and quantity of electricity that they are willing to generate to the system operator. (Depending on the time of day, the weather, whether any generators have broken down or are offline for maintenance. The prices can be anywhere from $2/MWh to $264/MWh. THAT IS GOOD STABILITY ISN'T IT)
The AEMO’s central dispatch engine orders the generators’ offers, from least to most expensive, and determines which generators will be dispatched. Its objective is to dispatch the lowest cost mix of generators to meet expected demand.
AEMO runs the dispatch engine every five minutes so generators are required to bid to supply electricity in five minute blocks. For the purposes of settlement, the five-minute dispatch prices are averaged every 30 minutes to form a wholesale market ('spot') price.
All electricity generation in each 30 minute period, receives the spot price for that trading interval. And that is what the electricity retailers have to pay and makes up a big part of our electricity bills.
WHAT A RIDICULOUS WAY TO PROVIDE AND SET THE PRICE OF THE ELECTRICITY WHICH IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF AUSTRALIA’S ECONOMY AND SOCIETY.
Surely it would be much better if the AEMO was to only take bids from generators that could bid to provide electricity in four hour blocks. It would ensure security of supply and much lower prices, than we have at present.
NOTE: It is proposed to build the Beresfield Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) which is a 170MW stand-alone battery to be located adjacent to Ausgrid’s Beresfield Substation near Newcastle in NSW. https://firmpower.com.au/our-projects/beresfield-batteryenergy-storage/
For these reasons I believe the Beresfield BESS should be opposed. Batteries alone can never produce electricity. Batteries take in electricity from the Grid and release less than they take out. Therefor batteries are INEFFICIENT IN STORING ELECTRICITY
Batteries can only take in electricity when there is a surplus in the Grid. On a cold, calm night there would be NO ELECTRICITY AVAILABLE from Solar panels or Wind Turbines for the batteries to store. When a battery is flat it is useless until it is recharged!

Particularly at 7pm and 7am (Or a time that suits you?) watch (and record) the mix of coal, gas hydro, batteries, solar and wind generation and the prices per MWh for each State on the AEMO dashboard.
IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT NO CLOSED COAL FIRED POWER STATION BE DEMOLISHED AS THEY CERTAINLY WILL BE NEEDED IN THE FUTURE.
