Catholic Schools who use Native Mascots

The Issue

Many places still use Native people or images as the mascots for their sports teams including 14 Catholic schools in the United States (one of which is a Native school and this petition is not about them). We the undersigned ask that the Bishops in the United States who oversee (Arch)diocese that have Native mascots or Native themed mascots push to end the use of Native Americans as mascots.

- It's tradition is not an argument as things were great when you were a kid, but now we all recognize this as racist and it must end. Schools can educate by doing the right thing.

- It's honoring Native people. No. Native people have made that clear, time, and time again. And we know from research that these mascots hurt Native people, but they also hurt non-Natives by giving them a self of unearned entitlement. Learn more by reading Stephanie Fryberg's study out of Standford on this issue.

End the use of Native peoples as mascots.
