Wow! In just 10 days we have gathered over 2000 signatures on our petition! Thank you for the incredible, passionate support for this cause!
Historic Landmark Designation Applications filed by our supporters are now pending and await presentation to the Historic Preservation Commission and, ultimately, to the Rockford City Council. The applications cover all three of the endangered historic structures that are part of the St. Peter’s Cathedral Campus: the Chancery, the Elementary School and the Convent.
Meanwhile, the order blocking the Diocese from further demolition still stands. We believe they will be forced to delay at least until the matter is heard and resolved by the Historic Preservation Commission and City Council.
So far, the Diocese seems to be continuing to fight the process, but I am hopeful that they will see the win-win opportunity that we see. There is great support for these historic properties. There is an awesome opportunity to build a long term plan that supports the Church, the neighborhood and the broader community.
We should be hearing more details soon on when the Historic Landmark Applications will be heard by the Historic Preservation Commission. Stay tuned and keep encouraging more supporters to sign the petition!
Thanks again!
