billboards that are excessively frequent, unnecessarily tall and inordinately bright
The Issue
We are writing to start a petition that will appeal to advertisers' sense of community - encouraging them to place their advertising in areas other than residential areas. Utah billboard laws are skirting federal mandates - allowing outdoor billboards that are excessively frequent, unnecessarily tall and inordinately bright – creating quality of life issues for Utah residents (in particular our Provo/Orem neighborhoods and historical Orem city park).
Furthermore, *studies are finding there is an increase in traffic accidents near billboards, creating an opportunity for business advertising to endanger the very customers they are trying to attract.
We want to encourage Utah advertisers to take immediate action to find safer ways to advertise, or limit their advertising to non-residential areas. We feel this will cultivate goodwill for those in the community who are negatively impacted by these signs, and demonstrate social and environmental responsibility for their organization.

* According to WalletHub, billboard-free Maine and Vermont ranked at the top of the list for traffic safety, while Florida, home to the most billboards,
ranked at the bottom of the safety list.
