As a family, we buy many products that are packaged in increasing volumes of cardboard. Over the last 10 years or so, the size of recycling bins has not kept pace with the change in packaging in the UK. This leads to overflowing bins, and it becomes a struggle to manage waste effectively. Often, we find ourselves having to make additional trips to recycling centres, which is neither time nor energy efficient. It seems only logical that bigger households should receive bigger recycling bins by default (not on application) to accommodate their higher volume of recyclable waste.

In North Yorkshire, the current recycling bin distribution does not reflect the needs of larger households, creating a barrier to effective recycling. This is a broader issue impacting many families who are willing and eager to participate in waste reduction initiatives but are hindered by the lack of appropriate infrastructure. It's time for the North Yorkshire local government to take action and make changes that will empower households to recycle efficiently.

Providing bigger recycling bins to larger households is not just a convenience, but a necessary step towards better waste management. It will encourage recycling, reduce littering, and be a proactive solution to tackle fly-tipping, a significant issue in our community. According to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, fly-tipping incidents accounted for over one million cases in England last year, highlighting the urgent need for systemic changes in waste collection.

By ensuring that the size of recycling bins corresponds with the household’s needs, the government can make it easier and more efficient for residents to participate in eco-friendly practices. This initiative can lower the environmental footprint of North Yorkshire collectively, promoting a healthier, greener environment for all.
