Desperate Dairy Ramps Up Efforts to Squash Plant-Based Milks

Animal Outlook

With cow’s milk sales going down the drain, the dairy industry keeps asking to the FDA to stop plant-based milks from being labeled “milk”. State dairy regulators have now joined in these desperate efforts, but the fact remains that FDA isn’t responding and may not think the industry’s consumer confusion claims hold water. Regulators voted at the recent National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments to ask the FDA to work with state agencies in stopping such labeling of dairy-free products. It’s easy to see why Big Dairy is really getting desperate: it’s dumping millions of gallons of milk consumers don’t want. But is there really confusion in the dairy-free aisle? The decline in cow’s milk sales is in the headlines, as an ever-growing number of shoppers are choosing plant-based milks, such as almond and soy, as healthier options that leave out both cholesterol and cruelty to cows. Let’s keep asking the National Milk Producers Federation to label its own product as “cow’s milk” instead of targeting dairy-free products that consumers want. Sign and share our petition!
