The #SheOla Campaign has turned 1. Thank you all for standing with me and supporting my petition for the past one year. I hope to see more people join us. Let’s aim to touch the 1 lakh mark now. I urge each and everyone of you to ask your friends to sign this petition.
Have you ever wondered what the future will look like when more women become commercial cab drivers and enter the transportation industry. I thought about it and spoke to my friend, who happens to be an urban planner. I realised that this move will have not one but several benefits for society as a whole.
The more I thought about it, I realised that change is never isolated. One change is a trigger for another. The domino effect!
1. When women hit the road as commercial cab drivers for Ola Cabs, it will create a demand for more public toilets, clean well-maintained, fully functional washrooms. As a result, people will use these toilets instead of urinating on public walls.
2. As a result of this, our cities won’t stink as much and there will be less disease in the air.
3. When more women occupy public spaces in a city like Mumbai, it will put the spotlight on the issue of badly lit streets and dark spots in our cities. This will create a demand for better electrification.
4. No more dark spots means our roads will become safer for men, women, children and everyone. Crimes like mugging, stalking and sexual assault will come down.
5. As more women begin considering commercial driving as a lucrative source of livelihood, they will begin accessing the RTO office a lot more. This will make such offices more gender-friendly.
The possibilities are endless. I’m sure you can spot many more benefits for society when more women become commercial cab drivers. By committing to my campaign, Ola Cabs will therefore be ushering in not just one but several positive developments.
When you look at it like this, investing in training and hiring 200 women in Mumbai or a part of Mumbai to become Ola Cabs’ driving partners will be like a small step that can lead to a massive impact.
All these deductions make me believe that the victory of this petition is bound to touch the lives of more than just 200 women in the long run. The macro picture is much brighter than the micro one.
