Better security for Tumblr! Ban scammers, get better account recovery!
The Issue
Tumblr is supposed to be a creative escape. A safe space for artists, writers, fandom geeks, and people just trying to survive the chaos of everyday life. But right now? It’s become an easy hunting ground for scammers. And it’s only getting worse.
I was personally targeted by a scammer on Tumblr. They messaged me, posed as a professional or helpful contact, and tricked me into clicking something outside the platform. Within hours, my account—my creative space, my community, my archive of years of posts—was gone. Just like that. And I’m not the only one.
🌐 Here's what's happening:
Scammers are DMing users directly, pretending to be Tumblr staff, popular blogs, mutuals, or companies offering fake opportunities. They lure you to off-site links or convince you to “verify” your identity on a fake page. These aren't just poorly written bots anymore—they sound real. They act real. And they are stealing accounts every single day.
Once they're in, they change your password, email, and recovery info. Your access is blocked. Your content? Locked. Your mutuals and followers? At risk. Tumblr’s current system gives them way too much power and users almost no protection.
🕐 Tumblr Support Is Too Slow:
Let’s be real. Waiting hours—or even days—for a response from support isn’t good enough when someone has already hijacked your account. I contacted Tumblr support within 5 hours of the hack, and even that felt too long. In the time it takes to hear back, hackers can delete posts, send malicious messages from your account, or even impersonate you to your friends and followers.
Faster action and emergency recovery tools should exist. We need:
🚫 Stronger DM filters for suspicious accounts
🔐 Stricter link monitoring in messages
📱 Optional two-factor authentication for all users
🧑💻 A rapid-response support team for hacked accounts
🧠 Education/warnings about common scams
🧾 Logs or notifications of suspicious login attempts
💌 Better recovery options for accounts with stolen info
💔 This Isn’t Just About One Account
This is about the safety of the entire community. Tumblr has millions of users, and a huge portion of them are young, neurodivergent, disabled, queer, chronically online creatives who need this space. For many of us, Tumblr is more than just an app—it's our comfort zone, our scrapbook, our friend group, our voice.
If Tumblr doesn’t step up its security and scam response, more users will lose access to:
Their blogs, art, fics, and original content
Their social connections and mutuals
Their ability to feel safe on a platform they’ve trusted for years.
TL;DR:
Tumblr’s current scam and hacking protections are NOT enough. We need real updates, real safeguards, and a real support system in place before this happens to more people. Please support this petition so we can demand:
✅ Better scam prevention
✅ Faster support response
✅ Safer recovery tools
✅ Real user protection

Do it for yourself. Do it for your friends. Do it for the mutual who’s been here since 2016 and posts nothing but memes and angst fics. They deserve protection too.
