Better funding for mental health services in the UK
The Issue
On the 24th September 2022, my cousin attempted to take her own life whilst vacating in Spain. They suffer with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) and as a result have attempted to receive help from the mental health team situated in the UK. Due to lack of funding from the government, receiving the mental health support has been unsuccessful therefore triggering multiple relapses. The news of her attempting to take her own life has had a general negative impact within the family and greater public. My cousin is currently in a coma and in a critical but stable condition. Unfortunately this isn’t the first incident of mental illness in the family. In response this instigated many of us to be disappointed due to lack of funding for the mental health service. We are pleading with the government to aid in providing extra funding for mental health services in order to reduce any further distress to the countries mental health epidemic. According to statistics 1 in 100 young people under 25 in the UK suffer from BPD along with 1 in 4 suffering from a mental illness. With only 11% of NHS funds going towards mental health services it’s evident with the statistics in hand there needs to be a significant improvement in the handling of mental illness and the funds contributing towards it. With 1 in 4 people suffering from mental illness the likelihood that yourself or someone you know and care infinitely fall into this category. As a country we are all responsible for aiding in global change for everyone.
