Dear Amazing Signatories,

This is Ali Tabrizi, director of the Netflix Original Documentary Seaspiracy. At some point in the last year or two you signed our petition to protect 30% of the oceans from industrial fishing by 2030, and we wanted to bring you an important update as we reach close to 1 Million signatures.

Our petitions goal is looking like it has a real chance of becoming a reality, thanks to the recent historic High Seas Treaty that was just signed last week!

After 20 years of negotiations (yep, you read that right!) countries finally signed the High Seas Treaty in New York last week.

According to the UN, the treaty will create marine protected areas in the High Seas, which is fantastic news! It will also provide a model for environmental impact studies of planned activities on the high seas.

Yet our keen eye spotted that fisheries will not be be regulated. So although there is no doubt that this is amazing news… we maintain some skepticism about how things will pan out… and reinforce the need for our specific petition to reach the eyes and ears of those in government.

However, we continue to look at positive stories like that of Panama who just protected 50% of its waters! Or how whale populations are rebounding in Eastern Australia, which gives us massive hope. We also know that every country has the potential to hit the 30x30 target if only enough citizens stand behind it!

So once again, thank you for signing our petition, and we would like to encourage anyone who feels inspired to share it so we reach our close goal of 1M!

Once we hit our target we will make sure this petition reaches the heads of state of: Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, UK, USA, Ireland, New Zealand, China, Japan and Taiwan.
