Make Benadryl available behind the counter only

The Issue

Benadryl is a silent killer in so many homes, and wrecks more families than you could ever realize. Parents don’t think twice about having this allergy medicine in their home.

TikTok now shows a substance abuse hotline instead of video responses due to how widespread this phenomenon has become. If you ask a teen if they’ve heard of the “benadryl challenge” or the “hat man” I am willing to bet they have heard of it.

This is especially distressing because personally, about a year before this horrifying “trend” exploded on tiktok, I took an excess amount of benadryl in an attempt to end my own life at the age of 15. The damage done from overdosing SOLELY on those little 25 mg harmless looking pink pulled— put me in the pediatric ICU on a ventilator, in a coma, doctors predicting I would be forever paralyzed.

I chose to overdose on this drug repeatedly because it was easily accessible to me at any grocery store or gas station just as it is for your children, and I knew it was lethal. Although our intent was different, intent is irrelevant when it comes to playing with your life. Death does not care about intent. If you take too much you will die. period

I am a teenager myself and Benadryl has been a popular choice among my age group for recreational use. It is so kept in the dark and parents will never realize it if they’re not also surfing the same parts of the internet their child is. So many parents do not realize how dangerous it is. Teens will take it in excess dosages to experience hallucinations and “trip”.

The other side effects are heart palpitations, dilated pupils, loss of consciousness, and cold sweats, arrhythmia, hallucinations, coma, and eventually death.

When abusing Benadryl people lose touch with reality and become SEVERELY unpredictable.  Misuse of Benadryl has put me into a coma and almost ended my life at 15 years old.

Please share this petition with your friends and family to educate parents on the dangers of this allergy medicine so readily available to teenagers. Having Benadryl put back behind the counter will greatly reduce the amount of deaths / harm caused to families in our society.

Remove the medicine from your medicine cabinet and keep an eye on your kiddos. Thank you for your support in protecting our community <3
