Cell towers do not belong in Belchertown neighborhoods and Verizon has not exercised due diligence and good corporate citizenship in finding an appropriate location. This tower would derogate from the intent of our zoning and be a detriment to the character of the neighborhood and Town. The tower would be an eyesore, negatively impact nearby property values, be a potential safety hazard due to its proximity to houses and difficult to reach location in the event of fire, and give off unmeasured radiofrequency radiation (Verizon has stated they only estimate the radiation) that would increase over time. At the July 14 planning board meeting, those in attendance learned for the first time that Verizon would seek to lease three additional tiers of antenna space to other carriers, in essence putting a communications hub in the middle of a neighborhood. Aldrich Street is an unacceptable and inappropriate location for this telecommunications compound.
