 MEDIA RELEASE June 23 2023 Restore Cuttagee Bridge to 25-tonne limit by 2025
We honour Djiringanj country and acknowledge all Djiringanj first peoples. We recognise their past and
continued custodianship of the lands and waters, where Cuttagee Bridge stands.
The FSCEHC report, is written with voices from the community, and done with a spirit of co-operation with
our stakeholders. It provides an overview of a critically important infrastructure repair project: restoration
of the Cuttagee bridge, just south of Bermagui NSW, to a 25- tonne load limit by 2025.
We invite the NSW State Government and Bega Valley Shire Council to set up a stakeholder process with
the community, honouring the 14000 who have signed the change.org petition challenging the Bega Valley
Council’s decision to pull down the bridge and replace it with a two-lane concrete option.
We encourage the Government to set up a sophisticated research and consultation process, inviting timber
bridge builders and specialists from architecture and engineering companies to give us a contemporary
perspective on the use of timber, alongside the possibility of retaining the one-lane advantage.
Spokesperson for FSCEHC Sheena Boughen says:
“We look forward to the NSW State Government Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison outlining how they will
honour their pre-election commitment of $15 million towards the "repair and restoration of the Cuttagee
Bridge in line with its heritage position" .
When asked by a resident if it would remain one-lane, Ms Aitchison said ” We have to preserve its nature."
