Barriers for Metro Transit Light Rails

Barriers for Metro Transit Light Rails
The Issue
Since the time that the Metro Transit Light Rail has been installed, there have been multiple pedestrian/car accidents involving the quick subway like service. There are subtle clues to indicate when a light rail is headed through a light or ready to park at a station, but not enough is done to prevent pedestrians and cars from crossing over the tracks at the wrong times.
The Metro Transit light rail is a quick and affordable public means of transportation built in the heart of the Twin Cities. Established in 2004, as the light rail has undergone many extensions and revisions, it extends from Minneapolis to Saint Paul. While it is revolutionary and aides in helping millions of riders get to their destinations every year, it can still be dangerous and even fatal.
On May 29th, 2024, at 4:08pm, my father, Brian Keith Moore, was struck and killed by the Metro Transit Green Line. I have always felt there needed to be more security measures to ensure pedestrians and cars would not be able to cross when trains are within a quarter mile radius. With adding barriers and gates, pedestrians and cars going perpendicular to the light rails will have to come to a stop the same way regular train systems are set up. This would help indicate to people, including those with disabilities, that when the gate or barrier is down, a light rail is approaching and that you should not make an attempt to cross the tracks.
This is about public safety and ensuring that the number of accidents and fatalities involving the Metro Transit Light Rail decrease in number.
