Protect the Barre Town Forest and Millstone Trails!

Protect the Barre Town Forest and Millstone Trails!

The Issue

We the undersigned call on the Town of Barre Selectboard to stop any further logging in the Town Forest and Millstone Trails. The logging in the winter of 2020-21 cut large open spaces, wide roads for machinery, and left debris and damaged trees. Trails were obliterated and what had been a beautiful, quiet forest was chewed up beyond recognition.  All for around $32,000 to the town, or the cost of a new car. This is inconsistent with the promises in the forest plan that any logging must protect habitat, trails, and the natural beauty of the area.  This beautiful and historic area is of immense value to our community. A natural forest doesn’t need to be “ managed” to survive. Left to their own, forests develop interconnected eco-systems above and below ground, built on trees of different generations growing and dying in place. This forest also reminds us of the generations of quarry workers who came before us.  It is worth more than the few dollars that were earned from the damage that was done last winter. We ask the Selectboard to take all necessary steps to stop the destruction of this natural and historic treasure.
