Dear Barnard Administration, How do you take it upon yourself to judge “true need” versus “false need” ? What does the “right circumstance” to qualify for winter housing look like ? Why do you recruit international students and students from low income backgrounds to Barnard college and then when housing is needed declare that it is “not your responsibility”? How many of the students that applied for housing were really granted it, or was your half assed ‘application’ process just for show? You say that I am not homeless, that my parents aren’t incarcerated, that I don’t need housing…In fact I have been homeless, I have slept in a starbucks, outside an airport… not before coming to Barnard no, but while studying here yes!! Because of Barnard’s housing policies. Why asking employers to work for a place to stay, exchanging services for a room from strangers on craigslist…why this seems perfectly ok to you rather than allowing me access to a room I pay for, I will never know. This farce of an application is even more disgusting and insulting than the outward denial of housing in the first place. You the administration will readily provide accommodations for the alumna that come to reunion, when you have students here and now who have no where to stay. Please do not email me with your mandatory diners and thank you letters to Barnard’s donors, I won’t be the poor ethnic poster-child for an institution as despicable as this one.
