The Huffington Post Canada contacted the Bank of Canada for a new article about NDP support of our Canadian Women on Bank Notes Campaign. As we all know, our current notes celebrate four white male politicians and the Queen, in the places of honour on the front of the bills - and various themes on the back. When asked to comment on NDP support for our campaign calling for gender equality on the cash, Bank of Canada spokeswoman Josielle Ménard responded as follows:
Ménard said its current polymer designs honour the "collective accomplishments of Canadian women and men," including the Canadian Coast Guard research icebreaker on the $50 bill, and the Canadian National Vimy Memorial on the $20 bill.
As for plans for new bank notes, there is no indication that Ménard mentioned that recent public consultations undertaken for the Bank indicated "many respondents said greater emphasis should be put on representing gender equality, multiculturalism and aboriginal culture." (Bank of Canada Press Release: 16 December 2014).
How many more surveys and public consultations - and signatures on our petition - will it take for the Bank of Canada to commit to celebrating female Canadian historical figures and a greater diversity of Canadians??? Do Wilfrid Laurier, John A. Macdonald, William Lyon Mackenzie King and Robert L. Borden and Queen Elizabeth II represent your Canada?
