The NDP Party has come out in support of the Canadian women on bank notes campaign, with a press release from Official Opposition Status of Women critic Niki Ashton and Murray Rankin, member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. Great!

You’ll see that the letter to Mr. Stephen Poloz states: “We write to express our unequivocal support for the campaign to include women on Canadian banknotes. We stand with more than 50,000 Canadians who were disappointed to see the only images of Canadian women to appear on our currency – the “Famous Five” and Therese Casgrain – replaced by an icebreaker on the new polymer notes.”
The letter goes on to say that, “We encourage the Bank of Canada to share with us its policies – current and forthcoming – that ensure that all future banknote designs are shaped by criteria such as the dozen prohibited grounds for discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act. In this way, we hope the Bank of Canada can ensure that future banknotes properly celebrate the contributions of all Canadians to our national life.”
NDP Member of Parliament Peggy Nash was one of the first supporters of our petition, and she also sent a letter to the Bank of Canada, and questioned Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz about our sexist bank notes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XlCOlJNJdg. Thanks Peggy! Other NDP supporters who have signed the petition include Megan Leslie and Peter Julian.
What about other federal politicians? Many thanks to MP Bruce Hyer, who was the first to endorse the campaign and sign the petition. MPs usually advise me when they sign, and to the best of my knowledge, the ones who've signed the petition are:
NDP:
Peggy Nash
Murray Rankin
Megan Leslie
Peter Julian
Niki Ashton
Green Party of Canada: 2/2
Bruce Hyer
Elizabeth May
Liberal Party of Canada: 0
Conservative Party of Canada:0
Is your MP supporting the campaign and/or speaking out about sexist bank notes? Shouldn’t all MPs unite in calling on Finance Minister Joe Oliver (who must approve our bank notes) and Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz to take action?
