Panellists on the CBC television show Sunday Scrum discussed their choices for Canadian women on bank notes this week. You can watch a video clip to see the women suggested by journalists Susan Riley, John Ibbitson and Julie Van Dussen. There was extensive media coverage following Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s statement that he’d support a Bank of Canada proposal to celebrate an iconic woman or women on our bank notes. Of course the big question remains, when will Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz take action? I’m afraid that, in the excitement about Morneau’s answer to a question posed at a press conference, I didn’t see any journalists rushing to ask Poloz this important question. Meanwhile, the North Saanich Council on Vancouver Island unanimously passed a motion supporting our campaign, and calling for Canadian women on bank notes. Thanks to Councillor Celia Stock for introducing this motion and to Jack Thornburgh for seconding it. I’ve been encouraging various city councils to support our campaign by passing motions – everything helps! Kudos to the North Saanich Council.
