Ban Unauthorized Drone Surveillance
The Issue
I camped out at a Walmart overnight and woke up to someone using a pseudo satellite drone talking in my ear on one of my devices. They were asking trolling questions while I was sleeping. I had intentionally turned the volume off before snoozing. To my shock, these drones, which include satellite and high-altitude pseudo drones, are being used outside many Walmart stores, supposedly to monitor the premises. However, what most customers, like myself, are oblivious to is that these drones are secretly tampering with our phones and other devices, accessing personal information, and even listening to our private conversations, etc. I immediately contacted Walmart management, who said they had absolutely no knowledge of the drones and directed me to the corporate Walmart phone number. The corporate manager told me directly that management is clearly aware of who drones their premises.
The use of drones by federal and police authorities has been expanding rapidly, often justified under the guise of safety and crime prevention. However, this surveillance often happens without citizen consent or knowledge, infringing upon our privacy rights guaranteed under the Constitution. According to a study by the American Civil Liberties Union, over 60% of Americans are concerned about their privacy rights in the wake of increased use of drones by government agencies.
These practices not only violate the Fourth Amendment but also erode public trust in law enforcement agencies. While drones can be effective tools for law enforcement when used properly, they must not be allowed to operate without strict guidelines and oversight. FBI surveillance alone has increased by over 40% since 2016, as reported by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, signaling an urgent need for updated privacy laws.
To protect our personal freedoms, it is imperative to prompt Congress and state legislatures to act now. We need clear regulations that restrict the use of surveillance drones to ensure they are not used invasively or intrusively against law-abiding citizens.
Join me in calling for a comprehensive review of drone surveillance practices and the implementation of legislation that requires transparency, citizen consent, and proper oversight in their use. Let us safeguard our right to privacy and prevent such personal violations from continuing. Sign this petition to demand change.
