Every year, countless individuals, pets, and wildlife suffer due to the misuse of fireworks by the general public. I have personally witnessed the chaos and distress that improperly handled fireworks can cause, and it is with this perspective that I urge for immediate action to ban their sale in all shops, making them illegal for public purchase in the UK.

Fireworks, when not handled correctly, pose a substantial risk to everyone. Statistics from the UK Government's Firework Safety Campaign reveal that over 4,500 individuals were treated in A&E departments in 2022 alone due to firework-related injuries. Many of these accidents occur around the time of major celebrations like Guy Fawkes Night, where public use of fireworks is at its peak.

Moreover, it’s not just human injuries at stake—our beloved pets and local wildlife are severely impacted by the sudden noise and bright lights produced by fireworks. The British Veterinary Association has reported a significant rise in the number of animals experiencing stress and anxiety each November and New Year's Eve.

As an alternative, I propose that licenses be issued solely to certified professionals and organizations for public displays, thereby ensuring that fireworks are handled safely and responsibly. These licenses should only be available for a limited period and strictly for organized events, not for personal use. This solution not only enhances public safety but also maintains the grandeur and spectacle of fireworks displays in controlled environments.

This petition seeks to bring about a safer environment for our communities and the natural world we share. By banning the sale of fireworks to the public, we can reduce the risk of injuries, protect our pets and wildlife, and still enjoy stunning displays under professional supervision.
