Ban the sale and use of fireworks to the general public
The Issue
I live next to a serene field, home to peaceful livestock and my beloved dog, Max. Every year, the days leading up to and following various celebrations and holidays turn into a nightmare for us. The loud explosions from fireworks terrify the animals in the field, causing panic among the livestock, and Max hides in fear, visibly shaken and anxious. The impact of fireworks isn't restricted to my situation alone; it affects countless pet owners, livestock farmers, veterans, and individuals with sensory sensitivities across the region and beyond.
Fireworks pose a significant risk to animals and humans alike. According to research conducted by animal welfare organizations, nearly 45 percent of dogs show signs of fear when they hear fireworks. In addition, the unexpected noises can spook livestock, leading to injury or even death due to stampeding. Equally concerning is the detrimental effect on veterans suffering from PTSD, as well as individuals with autism or other sensory sensitivities, who find the sudden loud noises extremely distressing.
Moreover, fireworks can cause severe environmental damage. They release a vast amount of chemical pollutants into the air, contributing to air pollution and the buildup of smog. The debris from fireworks often ends up in our water systems, posing a threat to aquatic life. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has linked firework displays to significant increases in air pollution levels on and around National Celebrations.
Considering these profound impacts, it's clear that the sale and usage of fireworks pose wide-reaching and persisting harm. Many countries have already taken measures to protect their residents and environment by restricting or banning public access to fireworks. The Netherlands, for example, has implemented bans on consumer fireworks, and has seen measurable improvements in public safety and welfare.
We urge lawmakers to take action and ban the sale and use of fireworks to the general public, as other substantial and safer alternatives exist for celebrating special occasions. Communities can organize controlled fireworks displays conducted by professionals, where safety measures are enforced, and minimal disturbance is ensured.
Sign this petition to demand change for a safer and more compassionate community. Together, we can make our environment less stressful for our animals, our veterans, and everyone sensitive to noise disturbances.
