Ban the Installation and Sale of Fence Spikes

Ban the Installation and Sale of Fence Spikes
The Issue
This issue is personal to me and many others. It starts and ends with the dangerous and harmful spikes installed on fences. True, these spikes serve as deterrents, but their damage far outweighs their utility. Endangered species such as bats and in specific regions, red squirrels, are unlawfully affected by these hazards. People's pets, a wide variety of wildlife, and in some tragic instances, children, endure severe injuries due to these spikes' existence.
But it doesn't stop with our ecosystems. The spikes' impacts reach even further. Birds, omnipresent in our world, carry seeds and contribute to biodiversity by spreading across different habitats. According to a study by the United States Department of Agriculture, the survival of many plant species depends significantly on birds (USDA, 2018). Any danger posed toward these organisms indirectly harms us and the diversity our world holds.
In addition to this, many household pets have suffered injuries due to these spikes. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reported hundreds of such cases over recent years, showing that our residential animals are being placed at risk through simple day-to-day activities (RSPCA, 2022).
We believe it is time for change. The sale and installation of these fence spikes should be made illegal, and all existing spikes should be removed to prevent further harm to our delicate ecosystems and loved ones. For the sake of our environment, our wildlife, and our children, your signature matters. Sign this petition and urge our lawmakers to say no to fence spikes.
