Ban social media for kids under 16

The Issue

In today's digital age, it’s becoming increasingly common to see children as young as ten glued to their screens, completely absorbed by social media platforms. As a concerned parent, I've witnessed firsthand the impact that this endless scrolling and screen-dependence has on our youth. As I see it, many kids these days are stuck to their technological devices, spending countless hours scrolling through pictures, videos, and statuses, to the point that they are practically brain dead.

The mental and emotional development of our children is at risk, and it's time that we take a stand. According to Common Sense Media, tweens and teens consume media for nearly six hours a day, not including time spent on schoolwork. This alarming statistic doesn't just show a prevalence of screen time; it highlights a potential crisis for our children's futures. Excessive use of social media can lead to issues like depression, anxiety, and a distorted self-image, which no child should have to suffer.

By banning kids under the age of 16 from having social media accounts, we are taking a step towards their emotional well-being and educational success. Without the distraction of social media, children may spend more time engaging in productive, real life interactions. This action can encourage them to develop hobbies, read books, or simply enjoy the world around them, contributing positively to their growth.

Parents and caregivers should have the tools to protect their children's mental health. This policy change requires social media companies to enforce age verification more stringently, ensuring the removal of accounts belonging to those under 16. Furthermore, by collaborating with lawmakers, educational institutions, and parents, we can work together to promote healthier online behaviors and set a new standard for how our children interact with technology.

Join me in urging social media companies and lawmakers to create and enforce regulations that keep our children safe from the potential harms of social media. Sign this petition to ban kids under the age of 16 from social media and ensure a healthier future for the next generation.
