The city of Medina, Ohio, has recently decided to hire sharpshooters to manage the deer population in our local parks, without consulting its citizens. This decision impacts all of us, especially families who frequent these parks. At the heart of this is the fact that our children play in these parks daily and the thought of sharpshooters operating there is alarming.

Moreover, the city plans to spend a staggering $90,000 on this initiative. This is taxpayer money that could be invested in alternative, non-lethal methods of wildlife management or even in enhancing public amenities. Non-lethal alternatives, such as fertility control or relocating deer, are effective and ethical approaches that should be considered first.

Introducing sharpshooters in public spaces, especially where children play, raises significant safety concerns. How can we assure the safety of our children when sharpshooters are present? Parks should remain safe havens for our kids, places of fun and adventure, not areas associated with such dangers.

Apart from safety, there is a broader environmental concern. Wildlife belongs to nature; culling disrupts ecosystem balance. We need comprehensive studies and input from wildlife experts to explore better solutions than resorting to lethal means.
