Our campaign has reached Parliament — but we need to keep going #BanSchoolUniformInPorn

When students from Little Feminist Bookclub at The Cooper School started this petition in September, they wanted the adults in charge to listen. Recently, and thanks to your support, they have. 

Calum Miller, our MP in Bicester and Woodstock, is backing the campaign, saying:

“I am full of admiration for the members of the Little Feminist Bookclub at the Cooper School. These fierce campaigners have identified an issue that affects them and does harm to many other girls and women. I was shocked to hear some of them feel anxious to wear uniform because adults make sexual comments towards them. I am proud to support them to achieve their goal of changing the law.”

And we are delighted to have been invited to meet with Jess Asato, MP and Baroness Bertin to discuss this important issue, as well as being invited to speak with Alex Davies-Jones, Minister for Victims and Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls.

Alex Davies-Jones has responded to the campaign saying:

“Young women and girls should not have to grow up seeing their school uniforms sexualised, and I commend these pupils for speaking out about something they feel so strongly about.

“Pornography must never normalise or glorify the sexual abuse of children. That’s why we are changing the law so possessing or sharing pornography which depicts an adult pretending to be a child under 16 will be an imprisonable offence.

“This is part of our wider crackdown on harmful pornography and tackling the attitudes that contribute to violence and abuse against women and girls.”

That’s a Government minister saying, on the record, that girls shouldn’t have to see their school uniforms sexualised. A group of comprehensive, state school pupils from Oxfordshire have had their voices heard. That’s a huge moment.

But the job isn’t finished. The new law coming in early November covers pornography where an adult pretends to be a child under 16. Anyone wearing a school uniform could claim to be playing a 17-year-old. That’s the dangerous loophole we want closed, with a complete ban on school uniform in pornographic content.

More than 38,000 of you have signed so far. Every new signature shows MPs and ministers how many people want this changed.
