The Issue

In Lane County, Oregon, our fair often feature booths representing various political and religious groups. These booths serve an important role in providing valuable information, promoting dialogue, and enriching our cultural diversity. However, the selling of merchandise or profitable activities from these booths can divert focus from their educational purpose.

Political and religious booths should be spaces of learning and engagement, not commercial enterprises. Allowing these booths to engage in sales risks alienating constituents who may feel uncomfortable with profit-driven motives. Furthermore, monetary transactions can give an unfair advantage to well-funded organizations, overshadowing smaller or local grassroots groups that may lack the financial resources to compete.

Our goal is to ensure that information and community dialogue remain at the forefront of these booths. By prohibiting sales, we encourage a more level and fair environment for all groups, large or small, to share their messages.

A solution to this is straightforward: implement a fair policy that disallows the sale of merchandise or any profit-driven activities at political and religious booths in public events. A regulation of this nature will help to preserve the integrity of these spaces, focusing attention squarely on the dissemination of information and ideas.

By signing this petition, residents of Lane County can urge the fair board to adopt such regulations, fostering an inclusive and educational atmosphere at our public events. We need your support to make this change possible. Please sign this petition to ensure our local events serve their true purpose—bringing community together through dialogue and understanding.
