Ban Runwalk in Carl Sandburg Middle School.

The Issue

In Carl Sandburg Middle school, we face an unnecessary struggle in our school gym classes—running laps. As a concerned student, I have experienced firsthand the physical and emotional strain it places on myself and my classmates. We are forced into excessive running, often to the point of exhaustion, and it feels more like torture than a beneficial exercise.

There is no doubt that physical education is important, but subjecting students to repetitive, grueling activities like running laps can be counterproductive. Studies show that overly strenuous exercise can lead to negative health impacts, such as increased risk of injury, stress, and burnout. For young students, this kind of intense physical demand is not only inappropriate but also medically concerning.

Alternative physical activities, such as team sports, Weightlifting, or circuit training, can provide diverse and engaging ways to promote health and fitness without causing distress. Implementing a variety of exercises can cater to all students' abilities and interest levels, fostering a positive attitude towards physical activity that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Schools in Rolling Meadows should revise their gym class curriculum to eliminate mandatory lap running and incorporate a more diverse array of physical activities. It's time we prioritize our students' well-being and foster a supportive environment in gym classes.

Please sign this petition to call for a change in our schools’ physical education programs and to stop the unnecessary strain of repeated lap running. Together, we can make gym class a healthier and more enjoyable experience for all students in Carl Sandburg.
