Subject: Ban Rickshaws in Karachi to Improve Traffic, Safety, and Environmental Conditions
Dear Decision-Makers,
Karachi, Pakistan's largest and most populous city, is suffering from severe traffic congestion, rising pollution levels, and an increasing number of road accidents. One of the major contributors to these issues is the outdated and unregulated use of rickshaws. We, the undersigned citizens of Karachi, urgently call for the phasing out and eventual ban of rickshaws in the city to create a more modern, safe, and efficient urban transport system.
Key Issues with Rickshaws in Karachi:
- Traffic Congestion & Road Safety
- Rickshaws frequently violate traffic laws, creating bottlenecks and obstructing smooth traffic flow.
- Their erratic driving and sudden stops contribute to accidents and injuries.
- Many rickshaw drivers lack proper training and licensing, posing risks to passengers and pedestrians.
2. Environmental & Noise Pollution:
- The majority of rickshaws run on outdated, smoke-emitting engines, releasing toxic fumes into the air.
- Karachi’s already high pollution levels are worsened by these inefficient vehicles.
- Their excessive honking adds to the unbearable noise pollution in the city.
3. Overcharging & Passenger Exploitation:
- Rickshaw fares are arbitrary and often inflated, with no proper fare regulation in place.
- Passengers, especially women and tourists, are frequently overcharged and harassed.
4. Lack of Modernization & Alternative Solutions:
- While cities around the world are modernizing their public transport, Karachi is still dependent on decades-old rickshaws.
- Cleaner and more efficient alternatives like electric buses, app-based ride services, and Metrobus expansion should replace rickshaws for better urban mobility.
OUR DEMANDS:
We demand that the Karachi authorities take the following actions immediately:
1. Ban new registrations of petrol and CNG rickshaws and gradually phase out existing ones.
2. Introduce strict traffic regulations and enforcement against reckless rickshaw driving.
3. Promote modern, eco-friendly public transport options, including electric buses and metro expansions.
4. Implement fare regulations and ensure safer, more affordable transportation alternatives for all citizens.
5. One-Year Deadline for Removal: Any rickshaw seen operating after one year from the enforcement date should be confiscated and destroyed, ensuring full compliance with the ban.
