Ban private fireworks sales in the UK
The Issue
As someone who deeply cares for animals, each year I watch with dismay as my once calm pets become terrified by the deafening booms of fireworks. Dogs tremble uncontrollably, cats find solace under beds for hours on end, and my neighbour's horses exhibit sheer panic in their stables. It isn’t just pets—livestock and wildlife also suffer, bewildered by the unpredictable explosions, which lead to stress, injury, and occasionally even death.
The problem is not with fireworks per se—they can be a dazzling celebration of special occasions. However, the proliferation of their private sale means these explosions are no longer restricted to coordinate public displays. Instead, fireworks can be set off by individuals at virtually any time of the year. This lack of regulation results in communities living in constant anxiety, with little to no warning before the skies are suddenly ablaze.
In 2020 alone, according to a survey by the RSPCA, over half of UK adults reported that their pets were affected by fireworks. Each unplanned eruption poses a threat to domestic and farm animals, as well as to human health, with hospitals reporting a rise in injuries related to mishandled fireworks. The noise pollution they create is known to affect vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with mental health conditions, compounding the need for urgent reform.
The solution is both simple and effective: ban the private sale of fireworks and restrict their use to licensed, organised public displays, where they can be managed safely and predictably. This approach can be mirrored after successful legislation in countries like Germany and Ireland, where stricter controls have led to reduced distress among animals and fewer firework-related injuries.
By supporting this petition, you will be helping to secure safer and more predictable celebrations for every community, ensuring that our pets, wildlife, and fellow residents can all enjoy the remainder of the year in peace and safety. Let us come together to protect those we care about from the unnecessary fear and distress caused by private fireworks.
Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to take immediate action and revise the regulation of firework sales in the UK. Together, we can create a safer environment for both humans and animals.
