The Issue

For over ten years, my husband wrestled with a porn addiction that nearly cost him everything: his job, his family, and the love of his daughter and me. Despite age restrictions, he found porn alarmingly easy to access—a circumstance that made it all the more difficult for him to overcome his dependency. I reached my breaking point when I had to take our daughter and leave him, forcing him to confront his addiction head-on by removing temptations and undergoing therapy. Porn tore at the very fabric of our family life, pushing him to seek more intense and risky experiences. It was only when he faced losing us that he realised the immense impact of his addiction.

Unfortunately, my family's story is not unique. Across the globe, individuals and families suffer silently due to the easy accessibility of pornography. Despite the so-called age restrictions, many children are exposed to hardcore porn at alarmingly young ages, setting them up for addiction and difficult relationships later in life. This ease of access contradicts the societal need to protect minors from harmful content and disrupts families in profound ways.

According to a 2020 study by the Center for Disease Control, approximately 20% of Internet searches are for pornography, reflecting a significant at-risk population for potential addiction. In another survey by the Journal of American Adult Psychiatry, it was found that 11% of respondents admitted to having compulsive or problematic porn use. Furthermore, a study from the University of Cambridge found that excessive porn use can have similar effects on the brain as drug addiction, altering mood, behaviour, and relational patterns.

Pornography offers no substantive benefits to society; its negative repercussions are far-reaching. The objectification portrayed in it distorts the perception of healthy relationships and degrades human dignity. The normalization of pornographic content has intensified risky sexual behaviours and has become a leading cause of relationship breakdowns. This is a pressing issue that requires decisive action.

We call on policymakers to implement a nationwide ban on pornography by creating stricter digital regulations and more effective verification systems for age restrictions. Additionally, educational campaigns need to be expanded to warn of the dangers of porn and to promote healthier, more respectful interactions among individuals. Only through comprehensive legislation and proactive measures can we protect individuals and families from the unfortunate fallout that unchecked pornographic content leaves in its wake.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to reconsider the harmful impact of pornography and take immediate action to safeguard our communities and our children.
