Ban Political Advertisements from Olympic Broadcasts

The Issue

I love the Olympic Games, a time when the world comes together to celebrate sport and unity. It's not just me; millions around the world look forward to watching their favorite athletes compete in a spirit of goodwill and healthy competition. Yet lately, it feels like this spirit has been tarnished by the influx of political advertising during broadcasts.

The Olympics are designed to be free from political propaganda. This principle is enshrined in Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter. Unfortunately, the sole broadcaster of the games, NBC, seems not to adhere to the spirit of this rule. It's disheartening to see political advertisements interfere with the games' original purpose: to bring us all together, regardless of political affiliation.

The average person is subjected to 5,000 ads each day, all day long (Red Crow Marketing, 2015). Our election cycle is in sync with the Olympic schedule.  Forbes estimates over $10 billion will be spent on political messaging.  With such a volume, it's crucial to maintain some spaces, like the Olympic Games, where we can take a breather from political disputes.

NBC must honor the original spirit of the Olympics by eliminating political ads from their Olympic broadcasts. The Olympic Games should be a space for unity, sportsmanship, and global community, not a platform for partisan politics. Let's bring back the joy of watching the Games without constant political interruptions. Please sign this petition to call on NBC to keep the Olympics free from political ads.
