Ban Plastic Bags at Walmart Checkout Use Paper Instead
The Issue
I recently visited a Walmart, and right outside, the sight of plastic bags scattered everywhere was disheartening. Not only were there numerous plastic bags littering the parking area, but a nearby creek was also tarnished by the presence of these bags, creating an unhealthy environment for both wildlife and community members.
Plastic bags become a significant pollutant when they enter our natural ecosystems. They never fully decompose, instead breaking down into microplastics that contaminate soil and waterways, posing a threat to wildlife and natural landscapes. Each year, millions of animals suffer or die from ingesting or becoming entangled in plastic waste, threatening biodiversity and ecosystem balance.
Walmart, as a major retailer, has the power and responsibility to lead by example in sustainability initiatives. Transitioning from plastic to paper bags is a feasible and impactful step in reducing environmental harm. Paper bags are biodegradable and recyclable, reducing long-term pollution and offering a more sustainable alternative for consumers. Several major retailers have already made this change successfully, demonstrating the practicality and consumer acceptance of paper bags.
A positive step toward sustainability would be for Walmart to officially ban the use of plastic bags for groceries and replace them with environmentally friendly paper bags. This initiative not only reflects a commitment to preserving our planet but also aligns with increasing consumer demand for more sustainable practices in retail. Of course, reusable bags are the very best option, but can be forgotten or disregarded, with most shoppers choosing bags at checkout, making paper bags the best option.
You may think that paper bags will be less reliable and sturdy, but many stores, such as Trader Joe's, have given strong paper bags and by making compostable, recycled bags the norm, our planet will thank us.
