Growing up in Tennessee, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact school mascots can have on students' self-esteem and overall school environment. Similarly, the use of "Native American" imagery often disregards the rich and diverse cultures of Indigenous peoples, reducing them to a tokenized stereotype for entertainment.

Research has shown that such mascots can have detrimental effects, especially on students from marginalized communities. According to a study published in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, exposure to Native American stereotypical mascots can decrease self-esteem and community worth among Native American youth, and increase their likeness among non-native peers to stereotype.
