Ban Microbeads in New Zealand

Ban Microbeads in New Zealand

The issue

Microbeads are the small, coloured beads of plastic found in face wash, foundation and even toothpaste. These small beads are a major environmental red flag as they are being washed down the drain after we use the products containing them. These small grains of plastic are so small that they pass through water filters and pollute seas, rivers and lakes. Because these beads are made of polyethylene (PE), they absorb toxins from the sea. Small fish see these Microbeads and thinking they are fish eggs, they eat them. The plastic sits in the digestive system and starves fish. They then travel up the food chain until we ultimately eat fish with plastic inside them. Not only does it lead to fish starvation and plant suffocation, but there are also body dysfunctions such as birth deformities and cancer that can come as a side effect of the toxins. By 2048 it is predicted that all underwater life will be extinct, that means that you will probably live to see the extinction of all aquatic life. If you want to stop or at least slow down the rate of extinction, make small changes that will eliminate plastic pollution such as throwing away that exfoliant containing microbeads. Together we can keep the ocean full of life for future generations and species. There are many alternatives to these deadly plastic beads such as jojoba beads, sugars and ground walnut shells. These are all biodegradable and will not harm the underwater Eco system.
