Ban listening to devices on public transport without headphones
The Issue
For the past few years, my experience on public transport has been marred by unnecessary and incessant noise pollution. As a frequent commuter, I've noticed a disturbing trend: more and more people are listening to music, videos, and more on their devices without using headphones. This inconsiderate behaviour has significantly increased the noise levels around me, adding immense stress to my journeys.
What once used to be a time for reflection, reading, or simply enjoying the commute peacefully has now turned into an ordeal where I have to contend with overlapping streams of unwanted noise. My anxiety levels have noticeably doubled, and I find myself dreading the idea of requesting people to lower their volume. These requests, unfortunately, often result in hostile or aggressive responses, leaving me and others feeling even more uncomfortable and unsafe.
The situation is alarming. Noise pollution not only affects mental health but also reduces overall productivity and wellbeing. The World Health Organization has highlighted noise pollution as a growing concern, especially in urban areas. Studies show that loud and unwanted auditory stimuli can increase stress levels, lead to a rise in blood pressure, and even contribute to heart disease.
With more people using public transport due to environmental concerns and urban living, it is crucial that we create an atmosphere conducive to everyone’s wellbeing. Implementing a simple yet effective rule where individuals are required to use headphones when listening to devices can greatly enhance the commuting experience for all. This rule is already in place in many jurisdictions worldwide with positive outcomes, including reduced noise pollution and improved commuter satisfaction.
We call upon local authorities to consider the interests of public health and welfare by making it illegal to listen to devices without headphones on public transport. This regulation should be enforced with appropriate signage in trains, buses, and stations, alongside a campaign to educate the public about the benefits of headphone use and the importance of mutual respect in shared spaces.
Join me in urging our lawmakers to pass legislation that ensures a quieter and more enjoyable public transport environment. Sign this petition today to help make our commutes peaceful once again by reaching our goal of 100,000 signatures.
