Kratom is a legal substance in most states in the US and is frequently underestimated for its ability to harm.

Kratom is a substance extracted from a tree native to Southeast Asia. While many people use it for self-medication due to its opioid-like effects, significant health risks are associated with the drug. Kratom has the same effects on the body and brain as an opioid and is easy to abuse. The harmful effects can range from simple addiction and money problems due to the obsession with the drug, to more dire consequences such as seizures, vision troubles, and intense withdrawals. Kratom has even been linked to some deaths. 

I have personally never taken Kratom, but have felt it’s damaging effects nonetheless. It is readily available at almost every gas station and vape shop in most states and is pushed as a natural solution (vitamin) to pain, comfortability, and/or as a mood enhancer. This “vitamin” is not regulated, studied, or FDA approved. Each pill can be laced with things such as lead and/or other heavy metals, ect. The sad truth is, it is presented to unsuspecting people who are simply complaining or in a hard place in life and it spirals them into a worse situation.

We must collectively raise awareness of the potential dire impacts of this substance and work towards its nation-wide ban, to shield our communities from an under-researched and poorly understood substance.

For the safety of our people, our children, and our communities, we must take immediate action. Let’s urge our lawmakers to thoroughly research the effects of Kratom and consider banning it nationwide due to its damaging effects.
