I was a Kratom user for 4 years. Initially, I was a pain management patient, relying on prescribed medications to manage my chronic pain. But when federal laws changed, my life took a different turn. I was introduced to Kratom, an herbal supplement that was marketed to me as a more natural remedy for my pain. It seemed like the perfect solution, being natural and supposedly safer. But in reality, I discovered that this stuff is poison.

Kratom has gained popularity in Tennessee, especially in cities like Knoxville, partly because it's often perceived as a natural alternative to opioids. While some tout its benefits, many, like myself, have found that the risks far outweigh any potential advantages. While it may temporarily alleviate pain, Kratom can lead to dependency, severe side effects, and other health issues.

Studies have shown that Kratom affects the brain similarly to opioids, potentially leading to addiction and other serious health problems. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there is no reliable evidence to support Kratom's safety or effectiveness for any medical use. Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported an increase in Kratom-related calls to poison centers, indicative of its potential dangers.

Tennessee already faces significant challenges with opioid abuse and addiction. Introducing or allowing access to another substance that can lead to similar outcomes feels counterproductive to the efforts to combat the opioid crisis. We have to think of the future implications, protecting our communities and loved ones from falling into the trap that I, and many others, have experienced.

By banning Kratom in Tennessee, especially in areas such as Knoxville, we have an opportunity to safeguard our residents' health and well-being. I urge the Tennessee state government to take swift action to regulate and ban Kratom. Protecting our communities from this deceptive substance is essential.
